Van Persie popular pick at Ballon D'Or awards

The United striker received plenty of votes from players, coaches and journalists to reward his fine form in 2013

ELITE: Not many players were picked more than Van Persie

Cristiano Ronaldo was voted as the best player in the world for 2013 but Robin van Persie certainly left his mark.
Among a distinguished field, the only people to receive more nominations than RVP were Ronaldo, Leo Messi, Franck Ribery, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar.
Van Persie enjoyed a fine debut season with United, scoring 39 goals in 52 starts for the Reds and the Netherlands.
He was recognised for that level of performance with five 1st place nominations, fifteen 2nd place and eighteen 3rd place.
Many of the Holland international's votes came from all over the world, with the likes of South Sudan, Turks and Caicos Islands, British Virgin Islands and Mauritania picking him as one of their three choices.
He also managed to be named in Roy Hodgson's trio of picks though.
While Cristiano Ronaldo was voted the world's best, he wasn't the number one choice from Reds past and present.
Van Persie opted for Dutch teammate Arjen Robben as his pick while former United star Gordon Strachan picked Messi.
